infant colic

Infant colic is one of the most common conditions encountered and treated by chiropractors. While the exact cause of colic is unknown, anyone who has encountered a baby with colic will know that it’s no walk in the park. It is thought that gas build-up in the intestine and muscle spasms may contribute to the discomfort experienced in colic babies. Current treatments include medication, changing of formula, and changing of positioning. However, chiropractic treatment is fast becoming a popular choice. Studies in both South Africa and Denmark compared chiropractic care to drug treatment of colic, with chiropractic care showing a significant improvement in colic symptoms (up to 90% in certain cases).

A typical chiropractic consultation for babies with colic:

During your first appointment, your chiropractor may ask you about various aspects of the baby’s journey, from pre-natal factors (labour and delivery) to post-natal factors and beyond. He or she may then try to feel whether the infant has any restrictions in movements due to muscle spasms or irritated joints. The chiropractor will use various techniques, such as gentle mobilisation or manipulations of the irritated joints to reduce muscle spasms and discomfort. While infants are much more flexible than adults, these techniques always remain within the child’s own normal range-of-motion. This is so gentle that the child often does not notice and does not experience any discomfort. Most sleeping infants do not even wake up while being treated!

During the consult, your chiropractor may also give you advice on positioning during feeding and carrying, and exercises that can aid your child’s development. Most infants will require 2-3 treatment sessions, with only a day or two between treatments. However, this will depend on the infant’s specific needs, as determined by your chiropractor. Afterwards, your infant should have less stiffness and joint irritation, become more comfortable and relaxed, and this may ultimately reduce the constant crying associated with colic.

I recommend that all infants with colic be seen by a chiropractor.
